Security risks in Taiwan
It’s wise to carry your personal ID (such as your passport) with you at all times in Taiwan.
Drug laws are stricter than in the UK, and the penalties are harsh, including capital punishment.
Violent crime
Crime rates are low, making Taiwan one of the world’s safest places.
However, organised crime and corruption do exist, especially in the construction sector.
Non-violent crime
Pickpocketing, purse-snatching, and credit card scams may occur, so it’s important to be vigilant, especially in crowded spaces such as night markets.
Terrorism
There have been no recent terrorist attacks in Taiwan. But British nationals remain a target worldwide – just one reason why it’s wise to arrange secure transportation.
Riots
Martial law was in effect from 1949-1987, and used to suppress political opposition. The period is known as ‘the white terror’, and 140,000 people were executed or imprisoned.
Events
Taiwan hosts major cultural, seasonal and international events, such as the Taiwan Lantern Festival, Christmasland, and Balloon Fiesta.
It’s renowned for its hot springs resorts. Baseball and basketball are popular sports. Karaoke is extremely popular in Taiwan, where it’s known as KTV.
They have progressive policies on LGBTQ+ rights, and there’s a huge Pride parade there each October.
