Security risks in Barcelona & Madrid
Apart from robberies, crime rates in Spain are low compared to other countries in Europe.
Through the so-called Galician Mafia, it’s the principal route of entry of drugs and narcotics into the EU.
Violent crime
The homicide rate is lower than the EU average.
In 2023, it was 0.68 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants, and the trend is downwards.
Non-violent crime
Spain has the second highest level of theft in the EU.
Beware pickpocketing and mugging, especially in tourist areas.
Terrorism
Many deadly terrorist attacks have occurred in Spain, most notably the 2004 Madrid train bombings, and the 2017 incident in Barcelona when a van was driven into pedestrians, killing 13 people and injuring more than 130 others.
Riots
There have been protests in Spain, most recently, against over-tourism and against Catalan amnesty.
