Overview of London

London’s one of the world’s major global cities, and Europe’s most powerful economically.

It’s the capital city of England and the UK, with a population of around 9 million people. When you include Greater London, it’s the largest metropolitan area in Western Europe, with a population nearing 15 million.

London stands on the River Thames, and has been a major settlement for nearly 2,000 years. The current financial centre (the City of London) was founded by the Romans as Londinium, and retains its medieval boundaries.

As Europe’s most visited city, London’s most famous landmarks include the Tower of London, the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, The London Eye, and Trafalgar Square.

Security risks in London

London is politically stable and a relatively safe place to travel. It’s in the UK where the health service is world-leading, even for visitors. The weather is rarely extreme, so natural disasters are highly unusual.

Non-violent crime

There is a risk of such as stolen luggage, wallets, purses or smartphones. This mostly happens at London’s major travel terminals and locations such as Mayfair, especially if a traveller appears foreign or wealthy.

Armed robbery

A small number of robberies are carried out in London by gangs on mopeds, occasionally using hammers or knives.

Terrorism

Islamic militants have been known to make knife-based attacks in tourist locations in London. There is also a low risk from Northern Irish militant groups using explosive devices.

Riots

Occasionally, right-wing fanatics flare into riots in Britain’s major cities, including London but the Metropolitan Police and UK Armed Forces are quick to respond. Most protests pass peacefully.

Events

As one of the world’s central hubs for sporting fixtures and entertainment events, there can be road closures and traffic delays on certain dates.
