The following facts highlight our understanding of the area and some of issues we address for our clients.

Abu Dhabi is located on a T-shaped island in the Persian Gulf, joined to its suburbs on the mainland by three toll bridges with more under construction. It has over 400 kilometres (249 miles) of coastline and several parks and gardens.

It’s a large, developed metropolis with a population of around 2.5 million. It hosts the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, the UAE Government, and various local and federal government offices.

Dubai has a population of around 3.6 million, over 90% of whom are ex-patriates. It’s located in the eastern Arabian Peninsula on the coast of the Persian Gulf, and is one of the world’s fastest growing economies – this is not due to their diminishing oil and gas revenues, but to real estate and construction, trade and financial services.

There are five main routes running through Dubai, with tunnels and bridges connecting the eastern and western sections of the city.

The terrain surrounding Dubai is mostly sandy desert, gravel desert, dunes and the jagged Hajar Mountains that run alongside the Oman border. (The entire area was covered with sand until about 5,000 years ago when the coast retreated inland.)

Overview of Abu Dhabi & Dubai

Abu means ‘father’ and Dhabi means ‘gazelle’. There are various theories about the origin of the word Dubai, including ‘they came with a lot of money’, ‘to creep’, and ‘baby locust’. There used to be regular border disputes between the two cities, which escalated into war in 1947.

Massive oil and gas reserves led to rapid development and urbanisation. Before the discovery of oil and gas in the 1960s, pearl diving was the key industry in the Persian Gulf. Dubai is thought to have started as a fishing village in the early 18th century, but has been an important trading port since the beginning of the 20th century.

The climate is hot, windy and humid, with year-round sunny blue skies and maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C during July and August. Intermittent sandstorms are common during the summer and can reduce visibility to a few metres. In the cooler season, there can be dense fog and occasional rain, when floods can occur due to lack of drainage.

Abu Dhabi’s supertall skyscrapers include the World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi and Etihad Towers, and new developments in the expanding business district on Al Maryah Island and Al Reem Island. The Emirates Palace was inspired by Arab heritage, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is described as an architectural masterpiece and is one of the UAE’s most visited buildings.

Dubai is known as the ‘city of gold’ and the ‘shopping capital of the Middle East’. It has more skyscrapers than anywhere else, including the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Iconic sites include the Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, and Dubai Miracle Garden. Dubai borders Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Sultanate of Oman, and was the third-most visited city in the world in 2023.

Security risks in Abu Dhabi & Dubai

The crime risk is low in Abu Dhabi and Dubai due to the severe penalties that apply. That said, it is a known sanctuary for money laundering, drug lords and corruption, and is notorious for violating human rights. Cybercrime is increasing, and the UAE is listed among the top 10 countries that are vulnerable to hackers.

Homosexual acts are outlawed (the UAE is ranked among the most dangerous places for LGBTQ people to visit), alcohol sale and consumption is regulated in most places, and drink-driving is illegal. Defamation of Islam on social media is a punishable offence. The UAE has one of the world’s the lowest violent crime rates, but theft, forced robbery, domestic burglary, fraud, sexual assault and abuse, and criminal damage can all occur.

Non-violent crime

The risk of pickpocketing is low compared to other industrialised nations. However, travellers are advised to take normal precautions, such as not leaving valuables unattended.

Riots

Protesting in the UAE is effectively illegal, and in 2024, 57 Bangladeshis were jailed for organising large-scale marches. Dissent is suppressed.

Events

The UAE is a hub for global trade shows, conferences and exhibitions in places such as Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Dubai World Trade Centre and Expo Centre Sharjah. There are shopping festivals throughout the year, international sports competitions, and regular arts and cultural events. Global Village Dubai is always a popular destination.
